Dear Tudor, I wouldn't worry about the water, especially since I assume that you don't live in the apartment, but occasionally visit it. I would worry more about the tanks on the roof, as they may be a source of trouble if they are not kept clean and in good condition. Bugs and bacteria in the water are a much bigger problem than radium.

If you are still really concerned about radium, then you should note that many mineral water brands on the market are derived from the Disi aquifer, so you will need to check where your favorite brand comes from. Also, commercial water purification plants are not designed to remove radium, so if you buy from these stations in Aqaba it will not reduce your radium exposure.

many thanks for this very helpful article Dr Nizar;
I have a couple of very simple questions . . . . I have an apartment in Aqaba, I understand that the tap water there comes from Disi -- should I avoid drinking the tap water (which tastes really good!!)? should I advise occasional visitors to the apartment not to drink the tap water?
many thanks and best wishes. . . tudor lomas

On the face of it, I would would not expect this to be the case because of the low clay content in the soils of the Disi area. However, it is something to think about and it would be worth while for somebody to take some samples and look at it.

Dr. Abu Jaber,
Nice analysis, but I am still worried about the enrichment of Ra in Soil. As known, for the past 20 something years most of the water uses from the DISI aquifer was mainly related to agricultural applications. Now what is the current status of soil of that region? Is it polluted already|? Does it impose or will it impose any level of risk for us and future generation. Here I am not talking about the direct consumption of water as a drinking water but of irrigation and farming. Should we go back and think twice about the use for the DISI waters in agriculture, if you are enriching radium in the soil which may end up in our food chain?

Dear Dr. Abu-Jaber,
I was doing some search over the internet on Quarry landscapes and rehabilitation. I came across your blog. I did a small talk about this in 2005 at a local conference and since then I have been interested in the subject. I thought I can benefit from the results of your work to build upon in my research papers. Let’s talk about this some time.

Thanks for this. What is more dangerous is the cover story from the National Geographic magazine for December 2008 which portrays Palestinians as "looters" of ancient archaeological products in the holy land while the Israelis do their best to preserve them. One of the most biased and outrageous articles I have ever read in this respected magazine.
